Cute Snowman Craft For Your DIY Christmas Decor

There’s nothing like a cute snowman craft to get you in the Christmas spirit. As I write, traditional carols are playing in the background and the rain is falling softly outside. My family is home, I have my cozy warm knit blanket and a candle is flickering in the background. This is one of those special moments where writing can be pure joy and I hope it will shine through into your home, too.

I know, I know…these little snowmen are adorable! They are soft and have that warm knit feel. The best part about this craft is that anyone can make these snowmen. You don’t need to knit or crochet to get that handmade look.

The Christmas village and trees are made from card-stock and the templates with cut files are available in my free library.

Supplies To Make A Snowman Craft

• FOAM BALLS (6 pack of 2.4 inch)
• FOAM BALLS (6 pack of 2.8 inch)
• YARN (Homespun Hepplewhite with crimped effect)
• PLASTIC YARN NEEDLES
• FABRIC SCISSORS
• DRILL
• SPADE DRILL BIT (1″)
• SERRATED KNIFE
• GLUE GUN
• PUSH PINS OR UPHOLSTRY NAILHEADS

PREPARE YOUR STYROFOAM BALLS

I found it best to cut and prepare all of the Styrofoam balls at once. While it’s easy to do, it still makes a bit of a mess. I prepared 12 of these in about 10 minutes. Then, I brushed them off and put them all in a container.

I know this step looks a little scary, but I promise it’s the easiest way to create a hole in to middle of your foam without using heat. Use a drill and a spade bit to create a 1″ hole in the foam balls. The foam cuts really easy and you’re done in a snap with the spade bit. Just be extra careful to keep your hands clear of the drill and put a scrap board under the foam to protect your surface. Another option is to use an apple corer or knife to make the hole. Just be sure that the hole is around 1″ in diameter.

Then use a serrated knife and cutting board to cut each side of the foam ball flat. I cut a little more off of the bottom, so it would sit nicely when finished.

ADDING THE YARN

It’s important to purchase thick yarn with crimping in it. This will give you a faux crochet effect when your snowman is complete.

Pull out about 2-3 arm-lengths of yarn and cut it with your scissors. Then string one end of your yarn through the needle, but don’t tie it. I found that working in smaller sections saved time because you don’t have to string such a long piece of yarn through the hole over and over.

Feed the needle through the center hole of the foam, leaving a one-inch tail. Then wrap the yarn back up over the tail to hold it in place. Continue to hold the yarn taut with your left hand while you string the next loop of yarn through the center hole again.

Repeat this process until you have enough yarn for one more last pass. Then feed the plastic yarn needle through the center hole and under the yarn already there to secure the end down. Snip off any excess. Repeat the process until the entire foam ball is covered.

Add some hot glue to the bottom of the smaller foam ball and press it into the larger one to create the snowman shape.

Create The Hat For Your Yarn Snowman

I used some old socks that I no longer wanted for the snowman hat. The dollar tree also carries these type of socks.

Using fabric scissors, cut the top portion of the sock off. Then tie a string around the top portion and knot it.

Finally, fold up the bottom portion (original top hem of sock) to form you hat.

Create The Face For Your Snowman Craft

Use upholstery nails or thumb tacks for the eyes of the snowman. Then add a white dot with a white gel pen or paint pen.

For the snowman nose, cut an orange strip of paper to 3/8″ thick and 2″ long. Add a little adhesive to one end. Then roll it around a skinny paint brush or skewer, closing it with the sticky side.

Then snip it to the length you would like the nose to be. Finally, add a bead of hot glue to the end and press it to the snowman.

Cut another strip from the sock and open the loop, so it looks like a scarf. Then tie it around the snowman. You can add a dab of hot glue to hold it in place. Finally, add a button to the scarf. The buttons I used are from Jo-Ann Fabrics. You can also add a few buttons down the front of the snowman for a “jacket” effect.

There you have it, an adorable winter snowman. They are about 3″ wide and 6″ tall to the tip of the hat.
